Will Veterinary DR digital x-ray CCD sensor problems be a topic of discussion at purchase time?

DR 3500 X Ray Table
Professional grade digital cameras do not lose any appreciable image quality over time, so why are some Veterinary DR x-ray camera systems losing image quality fairly quickly?

There are five villains that all CCD Veterinary x-ray DR camera sensors have to contend with and hopefully avoid... the first is x-rays themselves, second moving parts, third condensation, fourth is dust and the fifth is heat. These villains degrade the sensor and electronics, subsequently reduce image quality over time, but it can happen so slowly that you lose the image quality edge over time without noticing it until its to late.

When electronics are in the direct path of x-rays, x-ray will damage them. This damage can be reduced by some manufacturing tricks, but it can not be avoided. It is easy to determine if electronics are in the path of the x-rays, but if so it is not so easy to determine how quickly the damage caused to the DR camera’s sensor will degrade image quality. Some CCD systems use cooling to run the CCD chip. Cooling systems produce condensation, which in turn damages the electronics. One distributor has said they have replaced 21 of 23 CCD camera systems after two years under warranty because of this problem. This is one reason why a CCD system extended warranty costs approximately $5,000 a year.

CCD systems employ fans to reduce the heat generated by the highly energized camera sensor, but when the cooling is reduced or halted the chip will be damaged. Fans will cool the DR sensor chip to keep them from being damaged but they also cause dust and animal hair to be blown all around the DR camera. Introducing dust to the sensor and electronics will damage the system and reduce image quality.

This is probably not the first time you have heard about these villains that Veterinary x-ray DR camera sensors have to contend with and hopefully avoid. This problem is more significant than many previously believed. Others have taken a lets get our product to market quickly business strategy, but look at all the problems they have now built into their CCD systems! DIS has utilized its 30 years of radiology experience to develop a Veterinary DR system that avoids all these problems.

The DR Navigator 3500 Veterinary DR system operates in a sealed cabinet and is not exposed to condensation or dust and does not require cooling, our design also keeps the electronics away from x-rays. We also trust our system enough to produce quality x-ray images well into the future that we are backing it up with a 5 year warranty!

Digital X-ray Equipment Choices Provided by On-site Veterinary Supply Representatives Limited?

Online shopping for Digital x-ray equipment provides unlimited choices with value added positions!

Digital x-ray equipment sales
If I am looking to purchase digital x-ray equipment I wouldn’t find routine stops at my facility by veterinary supply sales representatives time well spent even for the much touted “show rooming of their equipment” as it’s called. Let me explain, they all say the same thing “I have what you need”. I know the odds of me finding the exact equipment I need in the onsite sales representative limited product line-up is very small when compared to the vast array of equipment choices I know are available online.

The onsite sales person’s sale pitch involves trying to sell you on his limited product offering, they will explain how they understand how the product works which you know may not be how it actually will perform in your practice. That is, you know you’re not going to buy from them once you realize they don't have sufficient product knowledge or the right product choices, or the warranties, terms and in-service support information to get you to listen any further.

The kicker is you now have nothing to show for all the time you have spent listening to their sales pitch. On the other hand, at your leisure with a few online keystrokes and mouse-clicks you can find the products to suit your needs. Buy it, have it show up at your facility in a few days with hot swap warranties and unlimited online in-service support, now that’s the “value added proposition online shopping can provide”. So before I let any onsite sales representatives into my facility for the purposes of "show-rooming", I want to be assured their product can offer this same value added proposition, or why would I waste my time. Besides in most cases the Veterinary supply sales person is a multi product line sales representative without any specialized training in the digital imaging.

When it comes right down to it, online shopping with all its value added propositions makes it irresistible. And rightly so, online shopping actually adds value they can't find any other way. Like time saving comparison shopping, specialized product expertise, hot swap warranted products and a vast array of product choices. The reality is, when it comes right down to it, whether online or brick and mortar there is nothing customers value more than the lowest price when supplied by a knowledgeable customer service based company. They may say they want this, that, or any number of things, but the only thing they actually will open their wallets to is the right product, at the right price, and with as many added value positions as possible and online shopping is it!

Digital X Rays Save Lives

Digital X Ray Saves Live
Today we were contacted by a man in Maine who found Diagnostic Imaging Systems online while searching for costs of Veterinary X Ray Equipment. This man is not a DVM or a tech, just an ordinary person who lost his puppy and wanted more information about Digital X Rays.

"We just lost our puppy from a piece of wood splinter lodged in its small intestines. We went to a great animal clinic up here in northern Me.and had a regular film x- ray done which didn't show any problems to speak of,maybe maybe.e.e a slight blockage. Probably a virus from eating something strange. We rushed our puppy to another hospital 24 hrs. later to a city 70 miles away and had a DIGITAL X-RAY done. What a DIFFERENCE it is not gray matter or most of this is something. I myself could see what was wrong just by looking at the digital x-ray. In closing if this helps any clinic or vet to invest in a digital x- ray machine, do it! This is a matter of life or death decisions. They can upgrade their old machines and go digital for 1/3 the price of a new one. I hope this helps others whether it is a vet or a client." - Mike

Mike told us that by the time the Digital X Ray was taken, it was too late. There was nothing the Vet could do for his puppy.  The purpose of Mike contacting us was not to bash the first Vet he took his puppy to. He really likes his Veterinarian and holds no grudge towards him. That Vet just had old equipment that was unable to properly evaluate the problem. Mike wanted to be more informed about Digital X Ray and the costs involved so he could go to his Veterinarian and try to express his concern that by not having current technology equipment it was a disservice to him as a client.

Having a Digital X Ray system isn't about having the latest and greatest new machine just to have it...it's about having the right equipment so lives can be saved.

Diagnostic Imaging Systems is the leading supplier of quality veterinary products since 1983, specializing in small and large animal packages. We can customize a package that's right for any Veterinary clinic or hospital. And with our Trade-in allowance, buying a new or used Digital X Ray system is more affordable than ever.

Purchase a Veterinary Digital X-Ray Imaging System for Free

Digital X Ray Choices

After selling Digital x-ray Systems for many years, I’ve noticed a pretty significant trend in the excuses used for why not to replace film x-ray imaging with digital x-ray imaging.  The most frequently used excuse is cost.  People are justifiably scared of strapping themselves to a $750 - $950 monthly lease payment.  Most Veterinarians will say they would love to have it, but have no idea how they would pay for it.  For the average veterinary clinic, the answer to this question is very simple.  A Digital Imaging System, when used to it’s potential, will pay for itself.
The average veterinary clinic, equine, small animal or mixed animal in most cases are not using there radiology at even half its diagnostic potential.  The reasons for this are simple. Some are based upon convenience, or lack there of.  Ask your self how many x-rays in the last week you have not taken because it was not convenient, the processor either had bad or out of chem, the processor took to long to warm up, or needed cleaning or the risk of a “bad” film could put you in a situation of a non timely retake.
These reasons for not taking a film radiograph are amplified significantly for an ambulatory practice.   Hours are wasted traveling back and forth to distant field calls.  Drive out, shoot, drive back, process, drive out, treat, drive back.  Repeat steps one and two if you missed a shot.  In many cases the doctor may skip the radiograph all together and just treat based on visual inspection or gut instinct.  Pre-purchase exams are usually out of the question.  All this changes with the use of a Digital X-ray System.
Digital X-ray Systems produce consistent results and are ready at a moments notice.  If an image is shot with the wrong exposure technique the image can be manipulated with the imaging software to correct most exposure technique errors.  When positioning errors occur or the patent moves you can repeat an x-ray is just seconds. For the equine doctors, it is a night and day difference.  Now, just one trip to the distant field call will be all it takes to x-ray, diagnose, and in most cases treatment the patient. The time savings alone will free you up for additional calls. More calls equals more exams, more exams equal more money.
Let’s assume you are shooting 24 x-ray patients a month, and with the convenience of a digital x-ray system you could easily double that number to 48 films a month, plus you will have better radiographic quality.  Charging $80.00 per set of films, revenue will increase from $960 to $1,920 a month.  The extra $960 revenue increase will easily pay the lease payment. With additional cost savings coming from your savings in time and no film, chemical, or processor maintenance costs.
These could be considered conservative cost savings figures.  I have seen veterinary clinics increase their radiographic revenue up to 4 times what was produced with conventional film x-rays.  With these increases in revenue and cost savings it is easy to understand why purchasing a digital x-ray system with a lease payment can result in an increase in revenue that will quickly produce the lease payment and potentially produce thousands more in positive cash flow.  That is why we say a new Digital X-ray System purchase could be considered a “FREE” purchase.

Used X-Ray Equipment Meets Veterinarians' Needs Without Hurting Bottom Line

Used X-Ray Equipment
Purchasing equipment is a huge investment for any veterinary business owner. It is not a decision that is made lightly, especially for a small or a start-up clinic. The economic downturn has led many businesses to think more cautiously about capital investments. Whatever the reason, many owners are looking toward purchasing used x-ray equipment instead of new. Depending on the size of your business, purchasing used radiography equipment from Diagnostic Imaging Systems may be a more feasible alternative than buying new at this time. In fact, there are a number of reasons veterinary professionals choose to purchase used x-ray equipment from DIS.

Looking for the best deal, while still getting a quality product is usually the primary goal for most veterinarians. When looking at making improvements to their equipment, savvy business owners will typically look at all options carefully, from purchasing new to purchasing a quality used piece. After deciding what suits their financial situation they will make the decision based on what best meets their needs.
Perhaps the most obvious reason for purchasing used x-ray equipment is the savings. The price of new radiography equipment can be high; however, the costs of used x-ray equipment are often remarkably less. In fact, you can buy good quality radiography systems from Diagnostic Imaging Systems for a very reasonable price. When you weigh the savings a veterinary business can achieve without sacrificing any quality or reliability, the outcome is obvious. You choose to buy from DIS.

When you begin the process of purchasing used x-ray equipment, the first question is often, “Where do I begin?” The logical answer would be to begin with a company that you already know and trust. Diagnostic Imaging Systems has a proven track-record with more than 30 years providing veterinary professionals with quality systems at affordable prices. The fact that the x-ray equipment is used need not impact the level of service and the quality of the product provided by DIS. We are continually committed to providing the highest level of service, which our customers expect from us.

The next question veterinarians find themselves wondering when they are looking at purchasing used x-ray equipment is usually, “Will it last?” DIS’s professional service technicians thoroughly examine each piece of used equipment to ensure you are getting a quality product at a great discounted price. With our reputation for being a fair and honest business, it makes sense to look to Diagnostic Imaging Systems first. If anything should go wrong, know that we have a service team that is easy to reach and quick to respond. Depending upon the product, many of the larger x-ray systems come with limited warranties.

The bottom line is that purchasing used veterinary radiography equipment from Diagnostic Imaging Systems could be one of the best business decisions you make this year. You have the opportunity to improve your level of service to your customers at a cost much lower than you would expect.

New Digital Navigator 3 way System: Enhancing Radiology Productivity

Digital Navigator 3 Way System
When your Veterinary Hospital or Clinic begins planning its new radiology equipment purchase it makes good sense to evaluate the latest in mobile / portable x-ray all in one solution for your center’s imaging department. Joe Hecker who is President of Diagnostic Imaging Systems (DIS) and product development director for the department of imaging services, explains that the changes in Radiology equipment usage and economics inspired by feedback from technologists, Veterinarians and radiologists has lead to the development of the most versatile and cost effective 3 way radiology system available.

“There had been some Veterinarian complaints about the present digital image equipment’s non- mobility and subsequent quality,” says Mr. Hecker. “And from the technologists’ standpoint, there had also been issues with lack of functionality.” To enhance the productivity for both the Veterinarian and the technologists, Mr. Hecker and his team of experts set out to develop a totally new self contained mobile table digital radiology system that would address their concerns. He explains that past experience with their stationery digital DR systems had been very positive, but lacked the mobility necessary to make them a truly versatile solution to the needs of the entire mixed animal facility. This lack of versatility and image quality of the present digital system inspired the team to seek the same functionality and image quality that the company’s Versa-View x-ray System offered, only now offering it in digital.

A mobile / portable DR digital table system was essential because the mixed animal veterinary facility includes a surgical center with operating room and a recovery room, all of which would have to share the Versa-View Digital Navigator x-ray System. “Being able to share the Digital Navigator between these rooms enhances clinical efficiency while providing better patient care,” says Mr. Hecker. “With the maneuverability, the compact size, the image quality and the speed of processing, the new Digital Navigator would prove to be a perfect fit for any environment”.

The development of the new system would need to support the mixed animal imaging department field x-ray capability for both small and large animal radiology. Mr. Hecker explains that with their present stationary systems non-sharing capability, they would have to purchase an additional digital portable system, but if they were to purchase the new mobile Digital Navigator with its field portable capability, the facilities Equine doctor would have a new modern replacement for its portable, analog x-ray unit. Positive experience with the facilities Digital Navigator in clinic led the facility to experience its portable digital field capabilities. “The equine doctor indicated we needed to go to a Digital Navigator system because of its fast and high quality images, plus it was the ideal single solution for both in office and field usage and would fit in perfectly.”

In its’ in office and field implementation, the DR Digital Navigator also aided with improving technologist workflow and Veterinarian productivity by providing higher-quality images. “We liked the fact that the DR Digital Navigators Ultra Hf12040’s 120kVp power settings were higher than the competitors,” Mr. Hecker notes. “When you’re dealing with a large breed canine or equine shoulder, it’s important to have the ability to properly penetrate thick body parts.” Soon, the development team found a third productivity-enhancing use for the Digital Navigators Mobile System. A special hospital project aimed at reducing the time in the main emergency room for report turnaround on possible fractures and foreign bodies, they again selected the 3 way all in one Digital Navigator with integral x-ray unit mobile table combination. Mr. Hecker explains that the decision was driven by lengthy processing time required by the facilities regular portable x-ray system. “You had to take the x-ray, process it, look at it, send it to the PACS, then pull up the PACS in the OR room,” he recalls. “We realized the only way we could get any faster was to get away from the old system.”

Today, Mr. Hecker says, images are processed right on the Digital Navigator system; the physician sees the image in the OR and can rapidly make a determination about whether a foreign object or fracture is present. With the planned addition of wireless internet capability in the OR, Mr. Hecker anticipates even greater increases in productivity.
“The Veterinarians, technologists and referring physicians will be quite happy with the increased productivity gained from the new Digital Navigator 3 Way System,” he concludes.

Stepping into Digital Radiology one step at a time

Now more than any other time in the history of Veterinary medicine, choices for digital radiology equipment are at an all time high. No matter what your practice type, there’s a digital x-ray imaging system that’s right for you. How many times have you thought about the advantages of digital over film and how digital could benefit your practice? You have read about the increased image quality, time saving, money saving benefits. You know you need to step up to digital at some point in time, so why wait. Has the cost gotten you concerned?

Cost should not be your only consideration when thinking about a digital system purchase.  If cost has been holding you back you need to not only consider the clinical benefits, you need to also consider the financial benefits stepping up to digital can provide. The increased positive cash flow digital can provide along with the flexible leasing options available can be a painless and profitable experience from day one! The cost savings for an average practice are substantial. Enough to make your lease payment for you while maintaining your present film profit. Some of your colleagues have stepped up to digital and reported time savings and image quality benefits along with a 20% increase in x-ray procedures, which has increased their bottom line an additional 20% after their lease payment.
There are four methods or step levels available to integrate digital radiology into your practice.  You may start at step one than move on to step two, or step three, or step four at any time in the future. It’s up to you to decide when it’s time to add additional new x-ray components. How old is your present x-ray equipment? How is it working? As long as it’s in working operation you may want to consider a digital system step upgrade or possibly trading it in on a complete digital system. The first two steps of the four steps involve using components from your present x-ray system and integrating the digital components into your existing x-ray equipment.
Going digital with Step one is the least costly, generally about half the cost of a complete digital system and would involve having your cassette cabinet removed and a new Digital imager with computer and software installed in its place.  Step two Digital upgrade would cost about one third less than the cost of a complete digital system. Step two involves removing your old cassette cabinet as in step one and replacing it with a new digital imager plus replacing your old x-ray generator with a new anatomically programmed high frequency 40Kw generator. Step three is a complete digital system with digital imager, software, computer, table, tube stand, x-ray tube and x-ray generator. Step four is a dental intra oral option which can be added to any digital step purchase at any time after purchase. The integrated digital Intra-oral option is setup for table top exposure or with the blue tooth adapter can be used anywhere in you facility where an x-ray source is available.
As you have read here, no matter what your need as long as you are actively using radiology in your practice there’s a digital step that’s ready to go to work for you. Make sure you compare digital systems and Digital imaging companies before you purchase. They’re not all created equal, exercise your purchase options by being an informed and educated consumer.  Good luck with your digital system purchase.
